John's first day at school

John seemed so big today. I mean, I know he's not a baby any more, and since his 3rd birthday he likes to tell us "I'm a big boy". He wil start school properly in May - he will be in year "K1" (kindergarten) and Jessica will be starting "P1" (primary). We will have John in the Thai class for the first year, just as Jessica was. This is partly to develop his Thai and partly coz it's not cheap having 2 kids in the Bilingual class!

Today John started summer class, which for 3 year olds is just a few hours of play and interaction with other little kids and a few hours freedom for parents! Jessica won't be doing summer school, but she was worried about John this morning and wanted to stay and look after him. Mam plans to spend some "girl time" with Jessica over the next few weeks while John is at school.

So, this morning we were expecting John to cry. But we underestimated his powers. He did a "Wai" to the teacher, who then told him to "Wai" mummy and daddy, and then he went off into the classroom with the teacher. He had a look on his face that was not totallt at ease, and trying to take in this big change without showing any weakness, kind of like the look on Andy Dufresne's face when he is sent to prison in The Shawshank Redemption (one of my favourite movies). Anyway, he didn't cry. Seemed quite fine and later when Mam picked him up he was happy and the teacher said he was lovely.
